OpenAI has officially launched its most powerful AI model yet — ChatGPT-5 — and the biggest surprise? Even free users can access it. According to the company, GPT-5 performs like a PhD-level expert across almost any subject.
CEO Sam Altman called it OpenAI’s smartest, fastest, and most useful model to date. For the first time, such an advanced reasoning model is not limited to paid users — a move that could massively broaden access to cutting-edge AI.
GPT-5: High-Level Intelligence, Now Open to All
Until now, models of this level were only available with paid subscriptions. But GPT-5 changes the game — it’s accessible to free users, albeit with some usage limits.
Sam Altman said:
“GPT-3 felt like a high school student. GPT-4 was like a college student. But GPT-5 is the first model that truly feels like you’re talking to a PhD-level expert.”
He added that going back to GPT-4 after using GPT-5 feels like using a pixelated phone screen after experiencing a Retina display. That’s how big the leap is.
What’s New in GPT-5?
1. Smart Speed + Deep Reasoning
GPT-5 has a built-in “router” system that automatically decides whether a query is simple or complex. It gives instant replies for easy questions and deep analysis for more challenging ones.
2. Next-Level Coding Skills
This model shines in programming. GPT-5 can write code in multiple languages and even build entire applications. In one demo, GPT-5 created a complete French-learning app from just a text prompt.
3. Fewer Hallucinations
One of the biggest flaws in older models was incorrect answers. GPT-5 reportedly reduces hallucinations by up to 80% and now understands its limitations far better.
4. Fully Multi-Modal
GPT-5 isn’t just about text — it can handle images, audio, and even video. It can analyze long videos and perform complex visual reasoning, making it OpenAI’s most versatile model yet.
Who Gets Access?
- Free Users: Limited access to GPT-5. Once the usage cap is reached, it switches to GPT-5 Mini.
- Plus Users: Higher usage limits.
- Pro Users: Unlimited access and use of GPT-5 Pro version.
- Enterprise/Team Users: Access begins next week.
Now Integrated with Microsoft
Microsoft also announced that GPT-5 is now integrated into Microsoft 365 Copilot, powering tools like Word, Excel, and Outlook with next-gen AI capabilities.
