Varanasi: A flood alert has been issued in Varanasi as the Ganga river continues to swell following days of relentless monsoon rain, leaving ghats completely submerged and riverside temples underwater. The district administration has urged both locals and tourists to stay away from the riverbanks, as the situation worsens by the hour.
🌊 What’s Happening Right Now?
According to PTI, all ghats in Varanasi are underwater, including the iconic Namo Ghat and Manikarnika Ghat, as the Ganga river has risen beyond the danger mark. Temples near the riverbanks are flooded, and boating services have been suspended indefinitely. The continuous downpour has made it unsafe to be near the water, prompting authorities to issue strong advisories.
🏘️ Impact Beyond Varanasi
The flood threat isn’t limited to Varanasi. In Sambhal, the Ganga is currently flowing at a dangerous 177.60 metres, prompting the administration to ramp up relief measures. District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya told ANI that:
- 16 flood control posts have been activated
- 13 shelter homes are ready to house displaced residents
In Prayagraj, floodwaters from the Ganga have entered the Bade Hanuman Mandir. Several low-lying homes are already flooded, and Ram Ghat is completely under water.
🕒 When Did This Start?
The flood-like situation began earlier this July, when nonstop heavy rain pushed the Ganga’s water level above the danger line. First to go under were the ghats and adjacent temples, followed by widespread waterlogging across riverside areas. The scene has only gotten worse with time, as rains show no sign of letting up.
With water levels still rising and more rain forecast, the situation remains tense and unpredictable. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay alert, avoid flooded zones, and follow instructions from local authorities.
